Jack, a senior dog, was despondent and afraid when he came to the Gloucester-Mathews Humane Society in Virginia. He was so depressed that he would curl up in the corner of his kennel.
“Through no fault of his own, a German Shepherd/Labrador Retriever mix has suddenly arrived into our care.” “He is an elderly guy, about 12 years old, and he is afraid,” stated the Gloucester-Mathews Humane Society. “Most dogs acclimatize gradually over time, and while they still prefer to be somewhere else, they learn to trust staff and volunteers and open up.” Jack is so depressed and terrified that whenever we enter his kennel, he hides in the corner and we have to pull him up to take him outdoors.”
The crew discovered that when Jack is outside, he gets little more animated, but still sedate. Susie’s Senior Dogs hoped to find him a home after a month at the shelter. “It astounds us that anybody has gone by this sweetheart’s kennel and walked on,” they said on Facebook.
“Despite his apprehension about the shelter, he has never snarled or acted aggressively against employees or volunteers.” We work with him every day, sitting with him and talking to him, but he is a sad and lonely young man. It breaks my heart to think he may have lived his entire life alone, but we would love to see him spend his remaining time surrounded by love, compassion, and never-ending snuggles.”
Jack suffers from age-related problems. He has pre-renal kidney disease, poor hips, and a positive heart worm test.
Susie’s Senior Dogs’ plea to find the gentle dog a retirement home was not ignored, and the shelter had some wonderful news to share just a day later!
The shelter wrote, “Jack became an instant celebrity last night when Susie’s Senior Dogs kindly posted his story to their page.” “We had several enquiries, but one wonderful young lady came right immediately with her other canine partner to meet him.”
“Jack immediately warmed up to them both, and we swear he was smiling when he left!” Other beautiful and caring elderly dogs like Jack can be found at the shelter. “If you had your heart set on Jack, please stop by and see Betsy or Dumplin or another senior pet in need,” they write. “They’re not famous yet, but they’re looking for their forever family as well!”
Susie’s Senior Dogs was equally grateful for Jack’s new owner. “The shelter received many, many inquiries about Jack, and we are so grateful to his new momma for hopping in her car and immediately coming to get him,” they wrote. “If anyone else is interested in Jack, don’t stop there!” Shelters require as many responsible adopters as they can get. “Jack’s homeless friends require your assistance as well!”
Because of their age, homeless senior dogs have a difficult time being adopted, but they have so much love to give! Nothing beats earning an older animal’s affection!
